Exploration History of Blocks 102 & 106

Exploration activities in the area began in 1978 with analog seismic acquisition. In the later years, both Vietsopetro and PETROVIETNAM also acquired additional regional 2D seismic.

In 1988, TOTAL entered a PSC over the area covering Block 106, parts of 102, 103 and 107, and acquired about 9200 km 2D seismic data. In 1992, Idemitsu acquired Block 102 and shot about 2270 km 2D seismic data.

In 2003, PCOSB farmed-in into Block 102 & 106, and subsequently acquired some 450 sq km of new 3D seismic over the Yen Tu - Ha Long structural complex area.

The 3D seismic data has better structural definition of the Miocene-Oligocene horizons and top of pre-Tertiary basement, and also has better imaging of stratigraphic traps in the Miocene-Oligocene sections. In 2005, PCOSB conducted two additional new 3D seismic surveys with 284 sq km in block 106 and 320 sq km in block 102. The survey was completed in June 2005 and data processing is currently in progress.

In June 2006, 106 – Ha Long -1X well was drilled with several oil and gas shows. In September 2006, 106-Thai Binh-1X well was drilled with a gas discovery of 120BSCF in Miocene sandstone.

In 2007, 2189.425 km 2D seismic line was acquired in Blocks 102 & 106 covering many potential prospects.

A summary of the seismic and drilling activities in Block 102 & 106 and vicinity are shown in Table 2.1 and Table 2.2 below.
